In 2020 Biden led Trump by eight points in Michigan, but only won by less than 3 percent of the vote. In Wisconsin, he was up by 7 in the polls and won by less than 3 percent. Today Kamala is ahead by less than 2 points in all of the 3 most consequential blue wall states and the gap has narrowed over the past week.
That’s right, while Trump has been running around spreading dangerous, and easily disproved, disinformation about the federal government’s response to hurricanes, doctors killing babies, sharks, the state of the economy, who won the 2020 election, Democrats wanting to end Democracy, the crowd sizes at his rallies and when people leave them, trans prisoners getting government-funded sex changes, kids getting sex change operations at school, Hannibal Lecter, immigrants eating cats and dogs, immigrants stealing black jobs, immigrants stealing homes, immigrants taking over whole cities, immigrants raping and killing without any consequences, immigrant women marrying rich dudes for their money–oops he was talking about himself on that last one. Actually, I made that one up. I don’t think he ever said that because that one is true in his case and he doesn’t peddle in the truth.
He’s also been busy selling stuff. He’s selling Trump bibles, watches, digital trading cards of cartoon versions of himself in weird costumes, crypto, all kinds of commemorative coins, pieces of an old suit, shoes, cologne and even perfume. I mean Trump perfume? What does it smell like? McDonalds? But it’s reported that he’s making tens of millions of dollars hawking this stuff. So you have to ask yourself how is it that so many people are still going to vote for such an obvious huckster.
Joe Biden was up by 8 points in national polls in 2020 and now Kamala is only up by 3. I hate to be a bummer because to the majority of us, it feels like there’s no way given how crazy Trump is that he can win this election, but… There’s a but. You hear it in all of the interviews with these supposedly undecided voters, and even some usual democratic voters. “Trump’s crazy and Kamala seems nice, but…” What do you suppose the but is? Inflation? National security? Who’s better for the economy? Crime? Immigration? That’s what you’ll hear but I think there’s another difference between Biden and Kamala. Mmmh, I just can’t seem to put my finger on it.
Oh, right, she’s a woman. And black. Look, it’s not the only factor but let’s get serious, it’s in the mix. We’re not supposed to talk about it but if you haven’t noticed America is, and has been, a super racist and sexist country. We’ve been trying to change that for over 200 years and we’ve made a lot of progress. But it’s still very much here and sexism is the much older, much deeper vein. Just ask Hillary, or any woman for that matter. I know, we’re not supposed to mention it because of the knee-jerk reaction that sends people to their corners. Supposed adults are too fragile to have adult conversations so we have to keep pretending like the reality staring us in the face doesn’t exist making half of us crazy for being gaslit and the other half crazy by having to twist themselves up in knots trying to come up with excuses.
Well, Obama was in Pittsburg this week addressing this head-on:
“Part of it makes me think that, well, you just aren’t feeling the idea of having a woman as president, and you’re coming up with other alternatives and other reasons for that,” he said addressing black men who have doubts about Kamala and then adding. “When we get in trouble and the system isn’t working for us, they’re the ones out there marching and protesting.”
And he’s right. Who mobilized more to get us out from under the insanity of the last Trump presidency? Return the favor people!
Both Michael Moore and Bill Maher are saying Kamala has this election in the bag. I think they’re mainly going on vibe. Maybe she has it but If I had to call it right now I’m going to say the Republicans take the Senate, 52 to 48, and keep the House and Trump is as likely to win as he is likely to not. And if he does win then we’re going to have an unhinged Trump, set free from legal troubles by an unhinged Supreme Court, with the House and the Senate. And guess what we won’t have anymore? The filibuster, that’ll be gone. Know what else we may not have anymore, at least for a generation, if ever again, elections that matter. There are state legislators all over the country trying to rig local elections, they’re mostly failing right now, but as soon as they have a weaponized DOJ and this Supreme Court all of those shenanigans can become real.
Every vote is going to be needed to secure this thing. The left needs to decide what’s going to be worse and stay focused. Even the Uncommitted Movement has come out and said that we have to vote against Trump and not vote for a third party. They couldn’t endorse Harris but they came out and said to vote against Trump. I think the tipping point for them is that it’s now extremely clear that Netanyahu would much rather have Trump in office than Harris. So I know everyone hates to hear this, and there are many voters who think that they live in safe states and they can vote third party to make a statement, as if this is just another normal election that can be corrected in four years. It’s not and it won’t be. We need everyone to vote against the possibility of another Trump term as if their lives depended on it. Because for many people it does.
Just as a quick reminder. Because I think people may have forgotten what the craziness feels like when it’s just not in the headlines you can ignore but instead it’s in your face night and day. Haitian immigrants are fearing for their safety in Ohio right now because of Trump’s actions and because he will use anyone as cannon fodder. First responders trying to help people in the aftermath of two hurricanes are saying that their efforts are being hampered by the disinformation being spread by Trump and his allies. When Trump is President how will the next natural disaster be handled? How will he use it to punish his perceived enemies? What conspiracies will he drum up to rile up his base next time?
And speaking of his base the votes that are going to matter most in this election are Republicans who know better. The ones who recognize that Trump is crazy, that he’ll be surrounded by lawless sycophants. The ones who know that while they don’t like Democratic policy and ideas they also realize that losing this election will not affect their lives in the way that a second Trump term will disrupt all of our lives. These voters exist and they are the only ones who can reach out to other waffling Trump supporters and let them know that Trump is too crazy to be trusted. They’re sure as hell never going to listen to me they just keep calling me a stupid libtard, even when I’m being nice. But it’s okay, I’m okay, I know I’m not stupid and I’m okay with being a libtard. It’s actually kind of freeing to admit it.
Anyway, every vote is going to count. We a need gigantic popular vote lead to counter the inevitable attempt to steal this election and the likely violence that is going to erupt when they lose. But first, they have to lose, and right now I’m not sure they’re going to. It’s going to be hard enough to just get past this election by winning, just imagine what it’s going to be like when we lose. Make sure everyone you know votes so we can get out of this mess and get on with solving the very real problems we have to address.
