Massachusetts was the first state to legalize same-sex marriage on May 17th, 2004. While Cambridge opened its city hall at 12:01 am, most cities, including Provincetown’s Town Hall, opened at regular business hours to a waiting crowd looking to get their licenses first thing. Some people had clergy ready outside to perform ceremonies.
