With it’s city walls dating back to the third century, Gjirokastër’s old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The old bazaar is considered a well preserved Ottoman town. The castle that overlooks the town was built and rebuilt over centuries and used as a prison during the reign of King Zog. Currently it’s a museum and home of the city’s folklore festival. The road out of town toward the coast is filled with abandoned structures and brand new construction.
